Abbott India recalls Digene gel batches following DCGI alert

The Times of India, New Delhi, September, 2023: Abbott India has initiated a recall of Digene gel due to taste and odor complaints, following a warning alert from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). While Digene is known for its pink color and sweet taste, the recalled product was white, bitter, and emitted a pungent odor.

DCGI has recommended discontinuing the use of Digene gel from the Goa facility for safety reasons. Abbott India clarified that the recall was voluntary and stemmed from isolated customer complaints, with no reported health issues. Other Digene forms like tablets and stick packs are unaffected. Mint, orange, and mixed fruit-flavored Digene gel batches from Goa, within their shelf life, should not be used. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to endorse alternatives and facilitate prompt reporting of product-related adverse events.
